Dither (series)
Images of the virtual and the immaterial.
Painting externalizes and makes visible discrete moments of an infinite interior. Painting is fixed and yet infinitely mutable. Its most essential component may be contained, held captive, but never truly commodified. Painting inhabits a space of substantive magic.
From the “Dither” Series, these paintings are abstractions based on stills taken from digital videos. The work is not a mimetic representation of these stills but rather a response to them. They are analogous to how we see and understand the world, how humans construct meaning imagining into our limited experiences in an attempt to make sense of them. In digital media, dithering is the process through which the gaps between information are imagined into in order to complete the image or to repress the disruptive. Life is made up of fragmented information, bits and pieces of a picture that we put back together in order to construct meaning. Hence the title “Dither” for the series.
The work uses optical effects to produce a sense of time and motion. In the way that many Op Art paintings generated visual vibrations through color, these paintings likewise use color to create visual shifts. One aspect of the work is experiential and evocative, suggesting a liminal state of consciousness in which our re-imagining of the world becomes most active. These paintings represent a search for a balance between the ephemeral, insubstantial and the materially real.
